Chapter 14 — Gunatreyavibhag Yoga

Verse 20
🕉 Original Sanskrit Shloka

guņānetānatītya trīndehī dehasamudbhavān

janmamṛtyujarāduḥkhairvi-mukto'mṛtamaśnute

🕉 English Translation

Deh paida hoti gunon se hee toh,

In teeno se uncha uthata hai jo.

Budhape janam maut ke dukhon se,

Mukt hoke anand se woh rahe.

📜 Translation English

This embodied one having transcended the three attributes which are the cause for the origin of this body, freed from birth, death, old age and all kinds of sufferings attains immortality.

💬 Commentary English

The three attributes are not the ultimate nor is the entanglement in them the ultimate state of life. The benefit of life lies not in remaining limited to the three attributes but rising above them. It is true that in the origin of the body the three attributes are the cause. Out of the three attributes whichever predominates in accordance with it will be the next birth. But this is also true that it is possible for one to transcend the three attributes while remaining in this very body. That is the true joy of life-

The sufferings which arise from birth, death, old age, etc. are due to the effect of the attributes. Remaining steeped in the qualities keeps one revolving in the cycle of birth and death. The eternal part of the Supreme which is of the nature of bliss becomes subject to sorrows. But on rising above the attributes one is easily established in the Real nature which is of the nature of immortality, bliss, immutablity and that of being unborn.

This state undoubtedly is quite distinct from ordinary life. Arjun heard, and the thought arose in his mind that whether this was possible! The same thought was put forward in the form of a query-
