💬 Commentary English

The matter regarding the description of attributes. The query of Arjun also relates to the attributes; that is why in this chapter one will keep getting the opportunity to understand along with faith the state of the qualities and the analysis of the aspect of faith in accordance with the qualities.

On the increase of satvic qualities the divine estate prevails in life. In such a state the inclination towards the worship of the gods is natural. It is not improper to worship the gods. The nature is governed by the gods! In the physical capacities and conditions, the influence of the gods is found to be there. There is a god for every organ and for every sphere of activity. The performance worship and rites for their appeasement, propitiation and pleasure is the basis of faith in the eternal traditions. But at times just for the sake of acquiring wealth are performed worship and rites. This kind of faith is of rajasic nature. The head of the yakshas (demi-gods) is Kuber. Here the worship of the yakshas implies the worship performed to attain material ends for oneself! Sometimes when the desires are not fulfilled then one comes under the subjection of the demoniac influences. For one's gain to cause damage to the welfare of others. For causing harm to others and for that purpose engaging in religious undertakings-this is demoniac form of worship.

There are some who cannot think of either their own welfare or those of others! Sitting somewhere in the cremation ground or adopting similar unholy means, at a unholy place, with evil intentions worshipping the ghosts and spirits and worshipping the departed souls-this is the tamasic faith. By worship of the manes is not implied the rites performed with reverence for ancestors, offering of rice balls, offering of oblation and any religious activity service, etc. undertaken for their sake. This in any case is part of the eternal religion. Here the indication is towards the invocation of the wandering souls under the influence of horrible demoniac propensities, activities or worship undertaken for causing harm or destruction to others!
