atattvārthavadalpaṁ ch tattāmasamudāhṛtam

🕉 English Translation

Jis gyan se deh me asakt ho,

Samajhta isee ko hee sab kuch hai jo.

Na yukti hai aur na jisme tatva hi,

Tuchh gyan aisa hee hai tamasi.

📜 Translation English

But the knowledge, i.e. the knowledge by which the human being clings to one single form of the vital body, that which is devoid of reason, without comprehension of the essential truth and is petty-that has been declared to be tamasic.

💬 Commentary English

The issue of seeing oneness in diversity in satvic knowledge and to see the division in the diversity in rajasic knowledge was given significance. The state of tamasic knowledge is altogether different.

The soul is the cause and body is the effect! The body has been created and will also perish. The Self has neither been created nor will it be destroyed. This is the analysis of the essential truth! Behind this there is logic, argument, facts, truth-all of them. Without the consciousness of the Self how can the body which is made of flesh, bones and skin see, speak, hear or walk? The reality is this. But in tamasic knowledge there is nothing of this sort. There is neither reason nor any kind of thoughts of essential truth principles! The body is considered to be all. The entire attention is confined to the beauty of the body, its makeup and decoration; to make it eat and drink and with it is maintained the relationship of mineness, attachment and egoism. If somewhere one manages to read or hear that the body is changeable, is perishable and will be left here, that the power of consciousness is its reality, there is no attention paid to this and no thoughts devoted to it. One is totally intoxicated in the attachment towards the body! Let someone ask why it is so? For how long will the body last that you are spending your life by clinging to the body? No such argument is entertained. That is why the preacher of the Gita for the other kind of knowledge has used the word 'petty'. He did not consider it proper to use the word 'knowledge' in its context.
