📜 Translation English

The earth, water, fire, air and ether, mind and intellect and ego-such is the eightfold division of My nature. This eighfold divided nature is my lower nature meaning insentient nature and O mighty armed one! My other nature different from this, by which this whole world is upheld, know it to be My higher nature, that of the very life element in beings meaning the conscious nature.

💬 Commentary English

Whatever is apparently visible outside, it is necessary to know and comprehend. The ether, water, light, air and earth! Of these five elements is the body composed; the five elements can be directly seen and are manifested! They are in front of everyone; they constitute the body and the state and condition of the body is dependent on these elements. In a concrete form all experience them in daily life. With them is associated subtle forms-the mind, intellect and ego! These are all differentiation of the inner-self. Both states exist in nature-microcosm and macrocosm; in the macrocosm is seen the visible external world and in the microcosm the body is seen! All these consist of the five elements! From the class of vegetation to insects, moths, animals and birds, human beings and those reside in the water, those who live on the land and those who fly in the sky-all of them are composed of these five elements. But the concrete seeming world is not all. One should move from the concrete to subtle! Therefore, a beautiful order has been put forward-that water is subtler than the earth, fire is subtler than the water, ether is subtler than fire, the mind is subtler than ether; intellect is subtler than the mind, ego is subtler than the intellect, the order does not end here-

Up to this level in the serial order the Lord has termed it as the lower i. e. insentient nature. Subtler than this, all is the power of consciousness; on deriving consciousness from which in all of them there is the appearance of sentience; they also appear to be conscious. In the order from concrete to subtler this consciousness is subtlest. Total immersion, absorption, single-pointed concentration in it, is the ultimate peace of life, the supreme destination, supreme status; this is the goal, this is the higher, i. e. the conscious nature.

The substratum of every particle of the creation is nature in the form of consciousness, i. e. the Supreme Being the Lord, it is made of that, and is maintained in the present with His support.

From these two verses emerge two states which confront the elevation-seeking seeker. One is the visible world and the other is its power of consciousness which is the Supreme. These are the two types of nature. Understand the order of ascension from concrete to subtle and allow yourself the opportunity to immerse and achieve oneness with the subtlest of the subtle power of consciousness and observe what lies in that state. Do not allow yourself just to get entangled in the visible sensual objects and nature. The one who is substratum of all, on whom all is dependent, the one who is supporting all, identify with that! What is that Supreme Principle? Come and let us see further-
