💬 Commentary English

The state of downfall has been described just in the form of a warning. By showing the terrible picture of fall the Blessed Lord actually wants to save us from that fall. The objective is elevation. Every inspiration from the Gita desires only the upliftment of the being. This verse is a very straight, clear and inspiring evidence.

In the preceding verse, lust, anger and greed have been stated to be the three gates of hell. Here the fact of being freed from them is being stated. Desire prevailing, and its larger form greed, and its enormous form anger-makes the human in any case fall from his real nature. Peacelessness, instability are caused by these very dispositions. Disinterest in worship and devotion is also due to them. Several kinds of deformations and vices take birth from them. Give a thought as to how upliftment is possible while these vices persist!

One more matter requires special attention. Undertaking religious activities and also entertaining these propensities inside simultaneously-even then elevation is not possible! In village of the Brahmins there was only one well of potable water. While playing, one leather shoe fell from the hands of the youth into the well. There was turmoil in the village. All the learned Brahmins of that village sat near the well and performed religious rituals in accordance with the scriptures. The sacred water from several holy places was poured into the well. Meanwhile, an aged Brahmin of that village arrived. On gathering all information he enquired as to where the leather shoe was which had polluted the water of the well. All of them said that the shoe was in the well. That person smiled and said that the shoe which had made the water impure was still in the well then where and what kind of purity was there? First of all take out the shoe then the performance of these religious rites will bear fruit and the water will become pure. The shoe in the form of lust, anger and avarice is still inside; while it is still there, the mind can never attain purity and without a pure mind how can there be elevation! First, free yourself from these dispositions and thereafter the effort made for self-elevation will fructify. The fruit also is extraordinary in the form of the greatest benefit in life-reaching the highest status i.e. attainment of the Divine Himself!
