📜 Translation English

I am the great sage Bhrigu amongst the great sages; the one-syllable Pranav i. e. OM I am. Amongst all the sacrifices I am the sacrifice of the repetition of holy words (Japa yagya); amongst the immovable I am the Himalayas.

Of all the trees I am the Aswatha (Peepal) tree; of the divine sages I am Narada, of the Gandharvas I am Chitraratha; and of the perfected ones I am Kapil the sage.

💬 Commentary English

Sage Bhrigu occupies a prominent place amongst the sages. He was extremely gifted, a man of austerity, wise and a man of knowledge; that is why he became eager to test the gods and even had the audacity of kicking Lord Vishnu on His chest. Lord Vishnu too with magnanimity adorned the mark of his feet as 'Bhrigu laat' on His chest and continues to do so. The same Bhrigu has been called by the Lord as one of His glories-

Amongst the syllables the one-syllable word OM signifies the Lord. 'Tasya vachaka pranavaha' (Patanjali Yoga Darshan). On several occasions in the Gita the single-syllable OM has been glorified. 'Pranavah sarvavedeshu' (Gita 7/8) In all the Vedas I am pranav.

The being who gives up His body remembering this mono-syllable OM which is indicative of Brahmn, attains the ultimate end (Gita 8/13). This very pranav is being spoken of as one of the manifestations of the Lord.

Sacrifices are of several types. In the fourth chapter of Shri Gitaji, they have been elaborated upon. In other sacrifices somewhere or the other there remains the need of procedures and norms, and on their not being followed accordingly, the possibility of adverse effect is there. The recitation of the name of the Lord is in itself a sacrifice. It is not bound by any norms. procedures. Whenever, wherever and howsoever it is done there is only benefit and only benefit to be derived. All kinds of vices are removed by recitation. Along side there is also the direct experience of the Lord. That is why the sacrifice of the recitation of holy words is one the Lord's glories.

Everyone is aware of the importance of the Himalaya mountain. It has been the abode for the performance of austerity of Lord Nar, and Narayan and also that of other perfected sages and great sages. The Blessed Lord has called the same Himalaysa amongst the immovable ones as His own manifestation-

The peepal tree has a special pace in the world of vegetation. Day and night all twenty-four hours this tree emits oxygen. In the most difficult areas and also in the fertile soil it is able to grow. From the point of view of reverence too it is worthy of worship. In the Skanda Purana the peepal tree has been considered to be a personified image of Vishnu; for this reason now here the Blessed Lord amongst the trees calls the peepal as one of His glories. The divine sage Narada is acompletely devoted devotee of the Lord and a man of knowledge; he has also the knowledge relating to the essential truth about every aspect of the form assumed by the Lord, 'mantra drishta' seer of the holy verse is a special adorer of the Lord. Amongst the divine sages Narada is called by the Lord as His manifestation.

In the abode of the gods the Gandharvas are a special class of beings. They are called the specialists in the knowledge of music and singing amongst the gods. Chitrarath is the chief Gandharva amongst them. Arjun too learnt the art of singing from him. This very Chitrarath is the manifestation of the Lord amongst the Gandharvas. Sage Kapil was born as a perfected sage. Manifested of the austerities of Kardam and Devhuti, the teacher of the Sankhya philosophy, is called the partial manifestation of the Lord. 'Kapil' is the superiormost amongst the perfected ones and for this reason is the manifestation of the Lord!
