📜 Translation English

Amongst the hymns I am Brihatsama and the Gayatri amongst the poetic metres. Amongst the twelve months I am Margasirsha (parts of December and January) and amongst the seasons I am spring.

I am gambling amongst the fraudulent, the splendour of the splendid, victory of the victorious, I am resolution of the determined and the goodness of the good.

💬 Commentary English

The Sama Veda has already been described by the Lord as one of His glories.

Here in the Sama Veda the eulogy of the Lord sung for His form as Indra, which is called Brihatsam, has been called as the glory of the Lord. Gayatri is the majesty of the Indian Vedic eternal traditions. The eulogy, prayer and meditation of the Lord-all are contained in it. Gayatri is the sure aid to make intellect pure, taintless and illumined. Gayatri is the mother of the Vedas, is the pre-eminent amongst all the metres. For this reason Gayatri has been of the called by the Lord as His own nature-

The month of Margasirsha in comparison to other months from various points of view is of special significance. Production of new foodgrains, transition from summer to the new season of winter. According to the Mahabharata Anushashan Parv the new year is considered to commence from Margasirsha itself. The discourse of the Gita was also delivered on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Margasirsha month. The spring season compared to the other seasons is found to be more pleasing by most.

Neither too much of cold nor heat; even in the absence of rainfall the greenery of the vegetation starts in this month. Spring is also called the queen of all seasons; that is why it is the glory of the Lord.

Further follows the description of a startling glory-'dhyutam chalayatamasmi'-amongst the deceitful I am gambling-

Gambling is definitely a vice; but sometimes to eradicate the evil from its roots this too happens. This precisely happened in the war of the Mahabharata. For the destruction of evil, gambling became the means. If the game of dice had not been played, then unrighteousness of the unrighteousness would not have been revealed to this extent. Otherwise too in creation, all three expressions of sattvic, rajas and tamas exist and in accordance with it all beings are induced to act. That the thoughts of the seeker should dwell on the Lord; for this reason is this indication given, not that he should, taking it to be the glory of the Lord, get inclined towards this sport, thinking that there is no evil in it. Though the lion has been called by the Lord as His manifestation, will you sit in next to it or as death is one of the Lord's glory will you accept it willingly? No! The outcome is bad; several persons say that Yudhisthir played the game of dice. The outcome was not good for Yudhisthir then how can it be beneficial to us? Contemplate on the Lord; while dwelling in the thoughts of the divine even if the evil feeling of gambling comes to the mind then it will be abandoned. This glory is in fact meant for the period of Mahabharata war. The aid of divine good qualities, contemplation of God the Truth brings radiance in the lives of the great souls naturally, because of which mere nearness to them awakens good inspirations in them; this very radiance is a special manifestation of the Lord. Any success achieved in life in any sphere taking one towards virtuosity and the resolution taken for elevation in life leading towards God, the purity of pure persons, are the thoughts and actions, in which are inherent sattva, are the glories of the God the Truth. There is no room for egoism for anyone. The main implication is that there should be cultivation and enhancement of divine emotions.
