Chapter 10 — Vibhuti Yoga

akşarāņāmakāro'smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ch

ahamevākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāham viśvatomukhaḥ


mṛtyuḥ sarvaharaścāhamu-dbhavaśca bhaviṣyatām

kīrtiḥ śrīrvākca nārīņām smṛtirmedhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā

🕉 English Translation

Akaar unmein akshar yahan jitney hain,

Samason mein hun duand samaas mai.

Samajh kaal ka tu mujhe mahakaal,

Karta hun sabki hee mai dekhbhal.


Mritun hun sabka kare nash jo,

Utpatti hee sabki mujh se hee ho.

Istriyon mein shree, vak aur kirti,

Hun medha, shama, dhriti aur smriti.

📜 Translation English

Amongst the letters I am the letter 'A', and of compounds I am dual (co-ordinates) compound. I am the inexhaustible time i. e. even in time I am mighty Time and have faces in all directions. Having a vast form I am the supporter and nourisher of all.


I am the all devouring death and the cause of the births of those who are yet to be born, amongst the feminine qualities I am fame, prosperity, speech, memory, intelligence, forbearance and forgiveness.

💬 Commentary English

All letters have two forms-vowels and consonants. The letter 'A' is pre-eminent amongst them all, it is the first letter of the English alphabet and nothing can be pronounced without it. That is why the Lord says that amongst the letters I am the letter 'A'. Sanskrit and Hindi languages are complete in themselves. Here the order of the letter, word and compound deservese thought. Compounds are several; in some there is pre-eminence of the first word and in others of the second. Where both are pre-eminent they are called the dual compound. This has been called by the Lord as His glory.

'Kalah kalyatamaham' the Lord has said this in the description of His glories. 'Ahamevaksayah kalo' I am the mighty time of the time. That time is in the form of reckoning; which never remains constant for even a moment; but here the description pertains to that time which is beyond the sphere of time; all the time is subservient to it, where no one has any hold; in the following verse by saying 'mrityuh sarvaharascaham' I am the death the destroyer of all, the Lord has expressed a similar thought that I in this form is the destroyer of all.

On understanding this expression joy of life enhances there; as fear of death and time, the destroyer, deprives the embodied being of this joy. When one starts feeling that in the form of death I am attaining the Lord Himself then where is the fear involved? Taking you in the form of Time the destroyer, I am not going to fear, O Lord!

That the Lord is present just in the form of Time the destroyer or death it is not so. The One who supports and nourishes all during their lifetime is He only; as 'visvatomukham' He has His face in all directions. Simultaneously He is able to look at all; what is the state of whom where? Just not death nor the restriction to being the sustainer and nourisher, the origin of all now and in future too is also from Him-

There is no distinction between a male and female in the eyes of the Lord. He is giving such an indication in the narration of His glories. Fame, prosperity, speech, memory, intelligence, forbearance-all these are found to be predominant in women. Amongst these five of them fame (kirti), memory (smriti), intelligence (medha), forbearance (dhriti) and forgiveness (shama)-are the daughters of Prajapati Daksh. Shree (prosperity) and Vak (speech) are the daughters of Brahmaji. Truly, these are not only feminine qualities but true adornments. Honour lies not in outer superiority but in virtues. Such pure honour is, in reality, in name and fame. The word prosperity is indicative of beauty and grandeur. The real grandeur lies in the combination of outward beauty and glory along with good nature, conduct, actions and the keenness in taking the divine name and having devotion for the divine. Use of pleasing and sweet language is speech. Memory of the duties pertaining to this world and the next and awareness towards it is memory. The pure and sattvic discerning intellect which is able to grasp swiftly, that is intelligence. In adverse circumstances the ability to maintain patience is forbearance and not to allow anyone mistakes shortcomings, errors or wrongoings to persist in the mind, to have forgiveness for it, to give other, the opportunity for rectifying that mistake is forgiveness.

By taking up all seven feminine qualities and describing them as His glory, the Blessed Lord has given several inspiring indications in this inspiration from the Gita. Having an impartial attitude towards all, giving respect to women, but for the sake of respect to imbibe all these virtuous indications in one's life. Any woman by experiencing this special glory of the Blessed Lord can feel honoured. For the present-day woman this provides special inspiration-
