Amongst the purifiers I am the fire and amongst the wielders of weapons I am Ram. I am alligator amongst water animals and I am Gangaji amongst rivers.

O Arjun! I am the beginning, middle and also the end of the entire creation. Amongst the many branches of knowledge I am the knowledge of the Self and I am the logic that determines the Truth amongst those who debate.

💬 Commentary English

Air brings in purity. Air is the best means of externally removing all impurities and bringing in purity. In this form it is also the manifestation of the Lord. From age to age the Lord manifests in different forms. In the Treta Age. He manifested in the form of Ram, the son of Dashrath, to annihilate demons. Therefore Ram as the wielder of the bow and arrow has been called by Krishna as His manifestation.

As the alligator is the most powerful amongst the beings who live in water, the Lord has called Him one of His glories. The Ganga is holy water flowing from the feet of the Lord Himself, and is comparable to nectar. Therefore the Lord has given the Ganga a place amongst His glories.

Commencing the description of His glories in the twentieth verse the Lord has called Himself as the beginning, middle and end of all the beings. Here the fact is the same but by the use of the word 'sarganam' the Lord has elaborated it further. Spiritual knowledge is that which takes one away from the ups and downs and perplexities of the world and inspires us to move towards divine emotions, which becomes the means for elevation. The knowledge that makes the human being understand the essential truth, importance and reality that very knowledge, the Lord says is His own nature. Argument, debate on spiritual issues and that of the issues of pure knowledge is that state in which the purpose is not to use sarcasm or refutation, etc. in argument or discussion but to use it for the purpose of determining the truth or establishing the stand of reality; for this reason debate has been termed as the glory of the Lord.

Keep on observing patiently, thoughtfully and sincerely the description of glories and grasp the truth inherent in them.
