Abiding in this body the eternal living soul is a portion of Mine and it draws to itself the six senses, including the mind, that abide in Nature.

💬 Commentary English

In the sequence of Shri Gitaji's spiritually useful, elevating, emotion-filled divine inspiration this is a magnificent example. In the third verse the obstacle in the path of the attainment of Supreme status, the severance of the roots of attachment with determination by the strong weapon of dispassion has been described, in the fourth verse in search of the Supreme status taking the refuge in the divine, in the fifth verse the oneness in Nature of the Supreme status and the Supreme has been clarified. Now in the seventh verse by describing the embodied being as being non different from the Supreme both inspiration and caution are being given simultaneously.

In this verse the inspiration to be derived is that the embodied being is the eternal, non-different part of the Supreme. That should remain to be that of the Lord. The Supreme is immortal, is and eternal that is why His part being non different is also immortal. What is described as the body is what comes in between. The divine consciousness is the same outside and inside. It appears to be divided but is, in fact, undivided. As the embodied being belongs to the Lord his actual relationship is with the Supreme and should be so. The worldly relationships are due to the past accumulated destiny or due to the bondage of indebtedness. These relationships in any case are of the body, by the body and limited to it only. Interact with them in harmony. Just as one is playing a role in the enactment of the Ram Lila, internally one should maintain firm relation that I belong to the Lord and He is mine.

The principle too is that without merging with the whole the part does not find contentment. The embodied being got entangled in the cycle of coming and going from the world as he could not continue to maintain his relationship with the Lord. If he had remained attracted to the Supreme of whom he is a part then his Supreme status was definite. The state was reversed; the attraction became directed towards the five senses along with the mind. The embodied being identified with the mind, the mind with the senses! The movement of the senses turned towards the world! Then the cycle of coming and going from this world was bound to happen! In what form does this cycle operate?
