This embodied being with the support of the mind enjoys sensual objects through ears, eye and the senses of touch, taste and smell-all five.

💬 Commentary English

The Indian eternal spiritual philosophy is in itself a very clearly organized system. From every point of view or ideology, thoughts and psychology, science, it is perfect, straight and transparent! Give this verse an open thought:

The embodied being in itself is neither an enjoyer nor a doer. It is of the nature of bliss. Being an eternal portion of the Supreme he did not require any sensual enjoyment. The enjoyment of sensual objects is when one contemplates pleasure in them. The eternal happiness is at the base of it all. For this reason 'adhisthaya mana' by taking the support of the mind! What constitutes the mind? Just one thought! When the attraction of the external world took hold then the movement is turned outwards. The senses played the role of assistants and the life turned towards sensual enjoyment.

One more indication which deserves deliberation! The senses too cannot by themselves enjoy the objects nor can they do so. Only when the mind is associated with them, the senses can enjoy their respective sensual objects. Try it out sometime-you will not be able to hear even a very loud sound if the mind is engaged elsewhere. You may pass somebody, even very closely, if the attention is somewhere else! You will not be able to see even with open eyes. Similar is the state of every organ. If the mind is associated only then it will be possible to react.

Psychology says that we are not where our body is, we are where our mind is. The preacher of the Gita has, therefore, time and again reiterated that the mind should be fixed in the Self, i. e. it should abide in Lord and external interaction should be carried on with the help of the sense organs. By doing so the bondage of action i. e. coming and going from this world can never happen. Till life remains, the senses will be there and their objects too will remain. Ears will hear, eyes will see, etc. It is necessary to correct the order. The embodied being should not identify with the mind and the mind not with the senses. The goal should be the Supreme; the joy should lie in the Lord. The senses should engage in proper conduct vis a vis their objects. There should be no expectation of happiness from sensual objects. The happiness emanating from sensual objects ultimately results in sorrow; this awareness should be there right from inception. To remain limited to attachment to sensual objects is gross injustice with the beneficence received in the form of valuable human birth which is rare to obtain even for the gods. Do not give slackness to the mind to seek the enjoyment of sensual objects. The direction of the mind should be towards Manmohan (the enchanter of the mind).

One has to act with discrimination. One has to keep the sense of discernment open. This very indication is given in the following verse-
