I residing in the bodies of all beings in association with prana and apana (the incoming and outgoing breath) as the Vaisavanara (flame of life) fire digests the four kinds of food.

💬 Commentary English

Whatever there is in the external nature and whatever is happening inside the bodies-it is happening due to the power of His Consciousness! He is the governor. In the preceding two verses He has taken up the issue of nature. Now in this verse the preacher of the Gita is indicating towards that very consciousness inside the body.

The entire system of the body is in itself a miracle. Several persons talk of miracles; they speak and enquire about the miracle; for them this indication is sufficient! That the system of your body is in itself a miracle. The food which is chewed, gulped, sucked, licked-these are the types of food we consume. The food which is chewed like the bread made of wheat, the food which is directly gulped like mix of pulses and rice (khichdi), halwa (kind of dessert), milk, juice etc., those which are sucked like a mango and sugarcane, etc. that which is licked by the tongue-honey, sauce, (chutney) etc.

Reflect-such a variety of food goes into the stomach; who is the one who digests? This verse is an answer to that question. For distancing oneself from egoism and to acknowledge constantly the divine consciousness, this is an infallible inspiration. I dwell in all bodies as the Vaisvanara fire (digestive power) united with prana and apana digest all kinds of food. The entire system of the body is dependent on the digestive power. If the digestive power is in order then the entire system of our existence works well. That is why the Blessed Lord here has stated this as the main issue.

Come and let us take inspiration from this verse. When everything is done by Him, He is the One Who sustains all beings; He nourishes the entire vegetation; He is the basis of all digestive power-then why this egoism and of arrogance? The second issue is that as the Lord Himself in the form of digestive fire resides inside the body then the food should also be pure and sattvic-this should be ensured.
