rajastamaścābhibhūya sattvam bhavati bhārata
rajaḥ sattvam tamaścaiva tamaḥ sattvaṁ rajastathā
Arjun Satoguna toh badhta hai tab,
Rajo aur tamo dono hee jayein dab.
Badhta tamoguna jo satva raj dabe,
Daba tam va satva ko rajoguna badhe.
O Arjun! By overpowering rajoguna and tamoguna, satoguna prevails, by overpowering satoguna and tamoguna, rajoguna prevails; similarly by overpowering satoguna and rajoguna, tamoguna establishes itself.

The attributes are three and are found in all. But they do not exist in the same proportion in everyone. Sometimes, in someone, one attribute may be found to be on the increase whereas at other times some other quality may be found to be predominating. How does one attribute predominate and what is the state of other qualities? This verse is clarifying this situation-
On the preponderance of satoguna the effect of the stress of worldly activities, uncertainties, indolence, lethargy and sleep, etc. will be lesser. At that time both rajoguna and tamoguna will be at the minimum level and similarly if excessive sleep or lethargy or any other prohibited action takes hold, then the influence of religious company, singing of hymns, etc. will be suppressed; there will also not be an inclination to do much, i. e. both satoguna and rajoguna will be in the state of disappearance. When greed and desire are overpowering, coming under subjection there will the intense inclination for action. Then the singing of hymns and recitation of scriptures is also less, at the same time the inclination is not towards sleep or indolence. In summary if one attribute is predominant the other two are at low levels.
