The person who does abhor illumination, activity and delusion when it occurs nor longs for if when if ceases.

💬 Commentary English

Here the matter being discussed does not pertain to the attributes but to the state beyond the three attributes. The issue is not of being just beyond one attribute but being beyond all three. That is why here, first of all, the effects of all three attributes have been related. The effect of satoguna have been related as that of illumination, of rajoguna activity and of tamoguna delusion! After describing the signs of those who have transcended the three attributes, the effects of the three attributes and then being uninvolved in them are discussed-

Till the body lasts these attributes will be associated in one way or the other with

the body. The illumination of virtues and good feelings will be there; sometimes there

may be an engagement in action; action cannot be abandoned in toto; can also not be

dropped totally, the Lord Himself incarnates and engages Himself in activities. Sometimes

with the intention of bodily rest, sloth and sleep will be there. It is true that the one

who has transcended the attributes has already risen above these; even then due to the

light of discernment, good deeds and good feelings will be generated; actions will take

place; body will also be given rest. Sleep and drowsiness will also be present. While

being beyond the qualities such a person is not averse to all such happenings; he also

does not get mentally agitated or perturbed while facing them and in their absence he

does not have the desire or longing for them either. In both the eventualities he keeps

himself uninvolved and unattached.

This very fact is clarified further-
