📜 Translation English

Arjun said:

O Lord! What are the distinguishing features of the one who transcends all three qualities? How does he act and behave and how does he go beyond the three qualities?

💬 Commentary English

Arjun is the representative of mankind; this is another example of the same. As the subject is complicated, the Bhagvad Gita has adopted the glorious style of question and answer, query and solution. Wherever Arjun felt that in future anyone can get confused due to the complexity of the subject, there itself in the form of the representative of mankind Arjun raised questions. To have all three qualities is the ordinary state of all human beings. But to hear and read that anyone can transcend all three qualities, it is natural to be surprised. Arjun asks a question-

Arjun query seeks answers to three issues. What are the marks of the person who has transcended the three attributes? How to identify that he has risen beyond the three qualities. What is the way he conducts himself, i. e. what is his daily routine like? What are the means to be adopted to transcend the attributes, by practising which in life he has attained this state?

In the following two verses the preacher of the Gita Lord Shri Krishna replies to the first question of Arjun's enquiry for which an answer has been sought by him.
