The conclusion of the first chapter took place with this statement of utmost grief rather the dejected state of Arjun. The mind is the cause of bondage and liberation; mind is the enemy and friend; the mind is the cause of elevation and degradation. Therefore O seeker! Get cautioned!! One must be watchful of the state of the mind. One cannot be certain about tendencies that influence Mind and open up the way for down fall. Dedicated devotion is for the control of the mind and caution is a means of keeping it in the state of alertness. Just see Arjun What was he and what has he become?
He the same Arjun who got the emotional entitlement to make Lord Krishna his charioteer. The Lord got seated on the lower seat and Arjun on the higher (the charioteer's seat is lower and that of the rider is higher); the same Arjun is now seated on the rear side of the chariot. That Arjun who had got the Lord on his side and danced with joy with carefreeness is today in the grip of grief, 'shokasamvignsmanasa' totally immersed in sorrow. The bow which was highly revered by Arjun is being relinquished by him. Who has brought Arjun to this mental state? Seekers, those thirsty for the knowledge of the Gita, this is inspiration or word of caution from the first chapter of the Gita. The invincible Arjun the same Arjun suffered defeat from whom–just by the lower deluded inclination of the mind.
This is a statement of a universal fact. Whenever the sight is removed from the Supreme, the importance of worldly names and forms will increase. The bent of mind will be towards the world and attachments will arise. Wherever there are attachments, there will be grief and sorrow–'mameti mullam dukhsaya'. 'Moh sakal Vyadhin kari mullah'–Attachment in the root cause of grief of sorrow. In the initial stage of grief, if one can lift oneself with a positive thought then things will be all right; otherwise, this grief or sorrow will take one towards a greater disappointment or dejection, and this dejection...where it will make one fall, what situation it will create...Beware! The necessity is that before this happens dejection should be converted to Yoga. 'Gita Prerna' is for all. It is important part of the eternal culture and a startling fact for the entire world, but fully supported by logic and reason. 'Dejection and Yoga' are two different directions but the Gita has made it possible through inspiration. Arjun's dejection became Yoga and so can be ours. With this conviction the first chapter stands complete.
