Intellect is not an organ which can be seen directly. The hands, legs, ears, nose and mouth can be seen but in the same manner intellect cannot be seen. Intellect is ability to discern. It enables us to know about True-false, insentient-sentient, proper-improper. The right utilisation of its capacity is in its turning towards God. On uniting itself with God or by setting such a goal, intellect can perform its real function. This possibility is not there in the eventuality of its being inclined towards worldly objects. There, the direction becomes just opposite. The individual soul starts perceiving reality in unreality and sentient in the insentient! Just imagine in such a situation how can the awakening of feeling towards the Lord (who is Truth, Consciousness and Bliss) take place?
The one who is without concentration his intellect is not functional (nastibudhiryayuktasya) and who is so, will also have no spiritual emotion (na chayuktasya bhavana). It is a clear and straight expression. The uncontrolled will always be inclined outwards. His thoughts will always have value for material objects; thought process will also be confined to that limited arena; the state will be like that of a frog in the well. The thoughts will never go further than that.
'Na chabhavayatah shanthih' (for the one without spiritual emotion there is no peace) The mind can remain stable only in the stable Lord, not in the transitory world! The goal of the undisciplined, unmediatatve person will be the world–and the worldly indulgences. The mind must have become disturbed. One has to remain alert. This state of restlessness can last not only for this life but also can extend to birth after birth. That is why the path of spirituality is considered to be difficult.
