From this starts the topic of meditation in this chapter. It has already been indicated that it is essential to bring knowledge into experience; only then it can be possible to abide in the state of yoga. Meditation is the laboratory which can convert knowledge into experience. Without meditation, single-pointedness, and concentration experiencing is impossible. This necessity of the Gita's preacher considering it to be essential, starts in this verse the topic of the yoga of meditation with divine feelings.
In fact, this verse is doing the groundwork of the yoga of meditation. Before sitting for meditation and attaining the state of yoga of meditation, what should be our mentality? This verse is a practical hint towards that state.
Without hope, expectation and desire, whatever is acquired, towards that too there should be no mentality of accumulation and indulgence. One without hope does not mean the state of disappointment which arises from sadness. Such a state of despair, finds no place in the inspirations from the Glta and in spirituality too. "Nirasahih" one without expectation and desire. In fact, hope is the originator of despair. If you entertain expectation then somewhere or the other there will be disappointment; therefore from the beginning, there should be this state of 'nirashih' free from expectation. Perform action and you will get the fruits as per your destiny. This should not carry in it the longing for accumulation. Whatever are your possessions, take them to be that of the Lord when utilizing them and not use them for indulgence. The condition required for"yattacittatma" and "aparigrah" will also be fulfilled. The mind will become free.
This state of a free mind is the state of solitude in the true sense. "Ekaki'-alonene At times even if external solitude is there, it is good. Where there is no worldly crow uproar and ups and downs of the world, as by staying a constant crowded environme the mind along with the body also gets accustomed to it. The practice of solitude also right from that point of view but the true solitude is that where inside all thoug and inclinations merge into One (Supreme). In such a solitude "satatamatmanam rah sthitah" the practice of the mind constantly abiding in the Lord will be automatica accomplished. This is the state of meditation. The question arises that this state w be achieved once it is known how to sit for meditation? How to make the spiritu endeavour for meditation? Guidance is given in the following verses.
