samam kāyaśirogrīvam dhārayannacalah sthiraḥ

samprekşya nāsikāgram svam diśaścānavalokayan

🕉 English Translation

Sir kaya aur gardan teeno hi ye,

Seedha achal inko rakke hue.

humaye na drishti kahin bhi kabhi,

Najar naak ki nauk par ho jami.

📜 Translation English

Holding the body, head and the neck,

erect and motionless, and becoming steady,

keeping the vision fixed on the tip of the nose,

without looking in any other direction.

💬 Commentary English

Some more necessary directives are given for the sitting posture! The back, neck and the head, all three should be erect. Any slackness or laxity in them could give an invitation to sloth, laziness, sleep. One should also remember that erectness means neither slackness nor any stiffness! If there is stiffness or stress, then it would result in early tiredness. One would not be able to sit for a very long time. There is also the need to be steady. Remain erect and motionless.In the early stages of meditation if one sits with the eyes totally closed, it might cause nervousness and confusion; for this reason the eyes should be half open and the sight concentrated on the tip of the nose. If the practice of meditation becomes all right, then one can take it in this sense that the inner bent of mind, concentrated vision which lies on the uppermost and tip part of the nose, should be fixed between the eyebrows. The vision should not be allowed to wander here and there. If the eyes keep wandering in other directions time and again, then how will meditation take place? For this reason 'disascanavalokayan' (without looking around in other directions). Let us proceed further-
