In the foregoing verse, the fact of conquering oneself by the Self has been stated. Here, further expression has been started with 'jitatmanah' (self-mastery). It is a beautiful example worth deliberating about, of the orderly expression of a particular aspect. The one who has conquered him self, meaning thereby that his life is not subjugated to worldly tendencies, he is in control of the Self; he is abiding in spirit of the Self and of the Supreme. Such a seeker, in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, honour and dishonour etc. attains the capability to remain calm and balanced in all these situations. The subjugation to the tendencies and circumstances causes the being to become unstable and agitated in such dualities. This subjugation persists so long as we think the world and this body to be ours; with this the relation of self and oneness with it is maintained.
This very relation of dualities will cause one to get elated on meeting with the desirable and agitated and dejected on meeting the undesirable. If winters are found to be desirable the mind will find happiness in it and them summers are found desirable then pleasure in that; otherwise there is discomfort. If someone says something of one's liking or if the circumstances turns favourable then one feels happy and otherwise, there is sadness. Similarly, if somewhere one gets name and fame; then one feels good; otherwise, there is hatred and aversion.
This is the greatest problem on the spiritual path that the inclinations, which should be abiding in the Lord, keep on swinging in the swing of these dualities. Then who will engage in spiritual devotion? Where and how will the mind get concentrated? How abidance in the Lord will become possible? Reflect and think! Only the calm mind can feel oneness with the Lord. For this reason, the Gita's preacher is inspiring in very clear and straight terms:Every word deserves deliberation. Behind every word is associated the facts and truth of life, and that too completely touching the ground level of practicality. Talking of the heights but rising from the ordinary level, assessing and understanding the requirements of life-
